The Emo Apprentice

I just realized while playing a bit of Soul Calibur 4 at work that the Apprentice (or whatever Jr. McEmo’s name is) is really nothing more than a re-inventing of Luke Skywalker.

Granted, he looks nothing like Luke, but he’s young, emotionally driven, and pouts when he loses.  I fully expect him to whine about wanting to go to Tachi Station.  If you had to re-design Luke for the 2000’s, he’d look a lot like Dark Apprentice kid.  Instead of the big hair of the 70’s, he’s got the tight buzz cut of the aughts.  He’s got the way-too-many-goth-belt wish-I-were-the-Crow accessory fascination thing going on.  He’s rocking the mummy bandage thing on his arms and legs.  His clothes are torn and tattered.  When he loses he even hangs his head forward and mopes.

I swear, if I didn’t know better, I’d guess there’s a Hot Topic on board Vader’s Super Star Destroyer.

I’m curious to see what he plays/acts like in his main venue, but so far I’m laughing at the emo kid in SCIV.  Granted, I still think he looks bad-ass (although I don’t think his backfisted style translates well to a fighting game), but that doesn’t mean I can’t laugh at him.
