Have you ever wanted to be a big name game designer? Do you want to be the darling of the game industry and command the attention of the media? What is with these game designer names out there, anyway? Kudo Tsunoda? Suda 51? Cliffy B? (Well, okay, Cliffy’s isn’t [...]

Making Games People Want to Play
January 30th, 2008 · No Comments
So this weekend I was waiting for an oil/transmission fluid change on my car, and I wound up thumbing through an old copy of Newsweek from 2007 (their end of year issue), mainly out of sheer boredom, and found an interview by familiar name N’Gai Croal chatting up Harmonix founders Eran Egozy and Alex [...]
Finding the Middleground

Rules are a crazy thing. Sometimes they are there to set boundaries on a game in order to define the objectives, and sometimes they are hindrances to better gameplay. I used to think that games needed to be defined by a very focused, pointed rule set. Aim the player towards one end of [...]

Catching My Drift
January 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Is it just me or are the motorcycles easier to control than the cars in PGR4? I’m playing through it this week while I toy around with the idea of doing a feature for it, and I’m finding I’m enjoying drifting on the bikes (and really, just the bikes themselves) wayyyyyyy too much.
I remember playing [...]
The ‘Guitar Hero’ Effect
January 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment
So check this out, suburban newspaper Beacon News is claiming that local music and guitar stores in their area have been seeing an upsurge of interest in both music and learning how to play music, and the reason for this is, wait for it, Guitar Hero.
I guess even the local “alternative” radio station in the [...]
5 Franchises I Really Don’t Care About Anymore

Sequels are a game developer’s and publisher’s best friend. Making one typically means your first title made enough money and generated enough interest to merit making another. However, make enough of them, too close together, and you run the risk of burning out your fan base.
Even though there’s been a huge outpouring of [...]

Why I Love Gamers

If you aren’t familiar with the whole ignorantly punned “seXbox” lameness that’s been making the rounds, go get caught up before we continue.
Okay, so folks paid attention to the entire news clip that aired on Fox with Kieghley taking on Cooper Lawrence, an inept scaremongering panelist and clueless psychologist. It turns out Cooper’s real motivation [...]
Keeping it Simple

I saw this today at geekologie, and instantly thought “what an awesome interface.”
So often we as humans inadvertantly overexplain things while putting so much effort into making sure we’re communicating effectively that we wind up muddying everything up, and create information overload. This beatbox (while too simple for my tastes; I need to work [...]

So Tired…

Up too late playing more Rock Band again. World Tour mode is starting to feel a bit like work now that we’re at 18 million fans. May or may not have a real post tomorrow about free game advertising through controversy.
Started working on a new gaming t-shirt this weekend. Found a screenprinter very local in [...]

Game Soundtracks
January 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Since I don’t see a lot of movies or TV shows much anymore, games are pretty much my only exposure to music. Stuntman got me hooked on Overseer before I’d heard it anywhere else, and hell, I just bought a Flyleaf track off of iTunes after playing it in Rock Band.
So I wonder if there’s an additional revenue stream for the games/music industry to be had here. Does anyone else listen to/buy game music? Would you want to have access to it on services like iTunes?
